Screen Time

Screen Time records which app had your attention and for how long, then rolls it up into a day, a week, a month, and a history per app. It is the same idea as the screen-time report on a phone, for the machine you actually work and play on. Everything is recorded and stored locally by the Nexus service; nothing about it needs an account or an internet connection.

Open Screen Time from the sidebar. There is also a Screen Time widget for your dashboard, phone, and panels.

What counts as usage

A session begins when an app takes focus and ends when it loses it, so time only accrues to the window you are actually in front of. Sessions land in the day they started, by your own clock, so a late-night stretch past midnight stays where you saw it happen.

Pickups are how many times you came back: one per focus session that day, the count that separates four solid hours from four hours of constant switching.

Day

The Day tab opens on today, with arrows and a date picker to move back through your history. At the top, the day's Total time and Pickups; on any past day, a vs yesterday figure as well.

Under it, Hourly charts the day hour by hour. Click a bar to filter the app list below to that hour alone, and Show all to release it. The Apps list ranks everything you used that day; click any app to open its own history.

Week and Month

Week covers the last 7 days: the Week total and a Daily average over a bar per day, with the same app ranking underneath for the whole range. Click a day's bar to jump straight to it in the Day tab.

Month covers the last 30 days as a heat map, one cell per day, darker for more time. Clicking a cell opens that day.

Per App

Per App is one app's own history over the last 7 days: its Last 7 days total, Daily average, Longest session, and Total pickups, over a bar per day. Pick an app from the Day or Week list to get here. Remove this app's data deletes that app's history and nothing else.

Turning it off and clearing it

Screen-time tracking has its own switch in Settings > Privacy & Data, under Local data store. With it off, no new sessions are recorded and the history you already have is kept.

The same row's Clear data deletes recorded sessions over a range you pick: Today, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, All time, or a Custom range. Deletions are permanent.

Tip

Screen time also feeds the app-usage overlay on the temperature charts in System Diagnostics, which is how a heat episode gets tied back to whatever you had running at the time.
